Warmer days are on the way and while there’s a lot about the Summer to love, wasps are definitely not on the list.
If you spend your summer days in the garden swatting wasps away from your family picnic or barbecue, you’ll know how much of an annoyance they can be.
But they are not just annoying; some wasp species are aggressive and will sting when they feel threatened. And when they sting, the females are capable of stinging multiple times, unlike bees.
The odd wasp might be annoying, but what if you find a wasp nest near your home, and you’re confronted with swarms of them every time you go outside?
You need to act fast to treat the nest and control the problem.
Here’s how to get rid of wasps from your home.
How do they get in?
Wasps tend to build their nests under eaves outdoors or if they find their way into your property, inside wall cavities, roof spaces, lofts, and garages.
Wasps are attracted to flowers and plants, uncovered bins, and sweet, sticky things. That’s why you’ll almost always find a wasp buzzing around your can of coke, especially if it’s been spilled.
Breeding cycles
In the spring, the Queen wasp lays eggs which develop into the worker wasps that will build the nest and feed the larvae. More worker wasps hatch as spring turns into summer, and the summer is when wasps are most active (which you’ll definitely know if you have a nest in or around your home!). The lifecycle of a worker wasp is 12-22 days, but the Queen can live for up to a year.
Problems associated with wasps in and around the home
Aside from the fact they can ruin your picnics, barbecues, and relaxing time in the garden, wasps can be very aggressive when they feel threatened. So if you find yourself trying to swat them away furiously with your arms or a rolled-up newspaper, know that this is more likely to provoke them to sting you.
Once wasps are on the attack, they release pheromones that attract other wasps and before you know it, you could be surrounded by a swarm of them.
Being stung is painful, but if you are allergic to their venom, stings can be life-threatening.
This is why taking steps to treat nests and control your wasp problem is your best bet.
Do I really need to get rid of wasps?
You see a few wasps buzzing around that same spot near the roof and you notice a nest. You might consider:
A) Googling how to get rid of a wasp’s nest and buying some DIY products.
B) Contacting a pest control company to come and manage the nest for you.
C) Hoping those few pesky wasps don’t become a huge problem and doing nothing.
Option C is not really an option if you notice a nest near or in your home because not only are wasps annoying, their stings can be painful and even dangerous, especially for children and pets.
